Greetings from the Computer Professionals' Union (CPU) !

For the past months, CPU with support from IBoP-Asia has been developing a toolkit for educators of basic sciences. The toolkit which is a compilation of free and open source software selected based from consultations with science and mathematics teachers in the secondary level highlights the whole initiative called Basic SnT in a Box.

National Achievement Tests have shown that Mathematics and Science continue to be the most difficult subjects in elementary and high school education. Studies of UP NISMED even conclude that a large number of Filipino students cannot apply math and science concepts to real life. Recognizing the role of Science and Technology education in future economic development, CPU spearheaded the Basic SnT in a Box project.

This collection of software programs aiming to make students appreciate scientific concepts and their importance. FOSS tools used in modelling and simulations will generate new avenues for interest among students and educators. With these tools, they can explore scenarios related to a particular science concept and experience its effects and logic. Furthermore, this compilation of FOSS tools is a different way of enabling teachers to present science concepts in a visual and interesting manner.

On 4 December 2009, CPU will officially launch the toolkit at the Ateneo de Manila University. We are inviting interested groups and individuals working in basic science education. Please confirm your attendance with rick@cp-union.com

We hope that with Basic SnT in a Box, CPU and IBoP-Asia can contribute in improving basic science and mathematics education in the country.

Yours truly,
